A Message from Fr Dominic Robinson, SJ,
Course Director for the LT Ushaw Summer School

Dear all,
It’s a great pleasure to invite you to Living Theology 2008 at Ushaw College. This year we are focusing the week on the theme of the Church’s relationship with and in the world, and are delighted to be welcoming a team of three excellent keynote speakers to challenge us to listen to the Church’s call to dialogue and collaboration centred on Christ. Dr Paul Murray, Lecturer in Systematic Theology and Director of the Centre for Catholic Studies at the University of Durham, will introduce the topic, then Fr Michael Barnes, SJ, of Heythrop College, London, and with much experience in inter-faith work, will address dialogue with non-Christian religions, and lastly Fr John Moffatt, SJ, Catholic Chaplain to the University of Oxford and former course director of Living Theology, will look at the dialogue with contemporary science.
You may well find also that the courses you choose feed directly into our theme, but in any case I hope that they will help to develop your own interests and needs in various areas touching our faith as Catholics and Christians. You will find this year that we have found it necessary to make a few timetable changes on account of our starting on Sunday rather than Saturday. We have found it necessary to reduce the number of days from 6 to 5 as a result of various factors. However, despite this, the changes to our usual timetable are not substantial, we have maintained the same amount of social time, and also managed to keep the teaching hours the same (7hrs 15 mins for each course).
Living Theology is very special because, far more than lectures and courses, it is an experience of living our faith together. We do this through the study, but also through the Liturgy and prayer, and through the community formed during this special week. That’s why your participation enriches our community, and also why in particular we want to welcome newcomers among us so they too can share this experience. If you know of anyone who might enjoy Living Theology please do invite them to apply. It would be a wonderful service to our Living Theology community. Please do spread the word, most especially among young people and those with a special responsibility in the Church to spread the faith, for whom bursaries are usually also available.
Please note that, together with information on Ushaw and the other Living Theologies taking place this summer, you will find a poster on this website advertising the Ushaw Summer School. Could you help us by downloading it and posting it in your parish or school or wherever you work or might meet potential Living Theology participants? If so we would be enormously grateful.
With best wishes and hoping to see you in July,
Yours Sincerely in Christ,
Fr Dominic Robinson, SJ
